Taoiseach: “I think the Government acted swiftly and accordingly in dealing with the current flooding crisis”

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has caused further anger last night by claiming that the government acted swiftly in regards to the recent flooding emergencies across the country.

The Fine Gael leader’s somewhat debatable comments come after a number of opposition TD’s claimed that the Government did not act quick enough to help those in dire need of flood relief funding. However Mr Kenny rebuffed the claims saying the Government’s response had been “very swift.” The Taoiseach who was attending an international trade mission in the Netherlands told reporters: “It’s one that has listened to people, one that has taken into account what they’re telling us.”

Mr Kenny also said there had to be a “frank” discussions with a number of leading insurance companies, who he claimed were making “sizeable profits” from the crisis. The Taoiseach said there was a “contradiction” between insurance companies saying they had paid compensation and businesses, which, he said, had “proved” that they had not.

Mr Kenny also believes the next elected government should appoint a minister who would be responsible in dealing with any future flooding crisis, although he stopped short of saying there should be a minister for floods.
