The cohesion and credibility of the current Cabinet has suffered a further blow today after the Taoiseach had to quickly deny any divisions over whether to cut USC or income tax.

It was recently reported that Labour would prefer a substantial cut to USC, whereas Fine Gael favors a cut to the top tax rate.

Today, the Taoiseach has said that such diversity of opinion have no effect on the Government’s stability.

Joan Burton also backtracked, saying today that ‘it’s not a major disagreement.’

The Taoiseach faces a motion of no confidence in the Dáil this Wednesday, on a day with a major protest against water charges is scheduled.
