Taoiseach refuses to rule out the possibility of a general election before Christmas

The Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has not ruled out the possibility of a general election being held before Christmas.

The Taoiseach refused to rule out the prospect of an early election when he was questioned by reporters in Killala, Co Mayo. Mr Kenny told the press there were a million opinion makers and one decision-maker. The Taoiseach went onto to say his sole focus was on delivering a Budget that would ensure the recovery of the Irish economy. Although when he was heavily questioned about the possibility of an election before Christmas, Mr Kenny responded by saying: “You know you don’t expect me to make any comment on that.”

Mr Kenny also said that people were speculating that everything he and the coalition did over the last number of months was only done because of the next general election, but said he would only make a decision that is in the best interests of the country.
