The Taoiseach Michael Martin has said that he is favour of a voluntary Covid-19 vaccination programme following reports that a mandatory system could be recommended.

Speaking to RTE News, the Taoiseach said that he still remains in favour of the voluntary programme as we as a country achieved one of the highest vaccinaton rates in the world through the current system.

Although Martin acknowledged that NPHET will make recommendations, the Taoiseach said that the voluntary system will be maintained.

The Taoiseach comments come after it was widely reported on Monday that NPHET were considering recommending mandatory Covid-19 vaccination.

It is understood that the issue will be researched and a paper will be published by the Department of Health in the immediate future.
