The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that he is deeply concerned over the situation in Afghanistan.
In a statement released today, the Taoiseach said the unfolding events have taken many by surprise.
Martin who also confirmed that Government is providing assistance to Irish citizens in the country, called for humanitarian needs, rights and law to be respected.
He added that international communities must play their part in providing humanitarian aid and facilitating refugees.
