Taoiseach says large proportion of restrictions to continue beyond Easter

The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has said that he expects that a large proportion of Covid-19 restrictions will continue beyond Easter.

Speaking to FM104’s The Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Taoiseach said that he expects restrictions to continue and the main focus is to get numbers as low as possible.

Martin also told the Station given that we are dealing with new variants we must continue to surpress the virus and we must have the R number needs to be significantly below zero.

He went on to say that the new variant is believed to add 0.5 to R number.

However he did state that the quality of life could be very much improved in the summer once all those over 70 are vaccinated.

Martin said that once the over 70s are vaccinated the Government will be able to organise society from there.

He added the reopening of schools and construction will be a top priority in the short term.
