Taoiseach says there won’t be two different time zones on the island of Ireland following daylight savings time change

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he will not allow a situation to occur were two time zones are on the island of Ireland.

In a response to a question submitted by the Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin, Mr Varadkar said such a scenario cannot happen and he could countenance a situation where Northern Ireland is on a different time zone to the rest of Ireland.

The Taoiseach’s comments come after the EU overwhelmingly voted in favour to scrap daylight savings time from 2021 onwards.

Although all EU nations have to agree to a specific time, the British Government have said that they will stick to the current system of changing the clocks every six months.

Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday, Mr Varadkar said the issue has not been discussed by cabinet ministers, but stated that he would like to have a debate and a possible vote on the proposals before an official decision is made.
