Taoiseach: “There is no need for anyone to sleep rough this Christmas”

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has received a backlash of criticism for his latest comments in which has said there is no reason for anyone in Ireland to sleep rough this Christmas.

Mr Kenny’s comments came on the first anniversary of the death of Jonathan Corrie, a homeless man who tragically died just yards away from the Leinster House. Mr Kenny
told his fellow representatives in the Dáil that there was no need for anyone to sleep rough this Christmas, Mr Kenny said: “In respect of the people who sleep rough on the streets a great deal of effort has gone into it and I don’t see any reason why the facilities and the opportunities that’s available now would mean that anybody would be on the streets of any city this winter, and I hope that’s not the case.”

However Mr Kenny’s comments did not go down well with fellow TD’s who have slammed the Taoiseach for his lack of action in dealing with the crisis, with many calling on him to clarify the situation on rising rent controls and whether or not rent supplements should be increased.
