Taoiseach warns of “new normal” and says restrictions may need to be reintroduced

Ireland will have a so-called “no normal” going into the mid part and second half of 2020. Social distancing, masks and even permanently working from home will not be a thing out of the norm with many of us having to undertake all three.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appeared to be giving with one hand taking away with the other when heĀ spoke to the nation yesterday evening from government buildings.

On the one hand, he announced a slight easing of lockdown measures starting from next Tuesday. They include an extension from 2km to 5km and elderly people to be allowed back out for exercise once a day.

However Varadkar warned that the 5 phase unwinding may see restrictions reintroduced if covid-19 becomes widespread. He said that the 5-phase-unwinding will be done in 3 week intervals and that they’ll be reviewed again at each stage.
