A judge has reduced the sentence originally given to a teenage boy was responsible for a crash that caused the death of a 16-year-old girl and the permanent injury of a 17-year-old.

According to RTE, Daniel Wyse, who is now 18, was found guilty of dangerous driving last year for the crash that killed his passenger, Kimberly O’Connor.  He was found to have been driving at 119 kmh in a 50 kmh zone.   Wyse had pleaded guilty to the charge and had also admitted causing serious bodily harm to another male passenger.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to stop, driving with no licence, driving without insurance and failing to give information to the Gardai.  He was originally sentenced to 4 years’ detention to be followed by 4 years of supervision.  He was banned from driving for 15 years.

At the appeal hearing, the judge took account of the fact that Wyse was very young at the time of the accident.  He agreed to reduce the sentence by 2 years, and then suspended the final 18 months of the remaining time.  The driving ban was also reduced to 10 years.
