Teenager, who claimed to have coronavirus, charged after allegedly spitting at garda who is now forced to self isolate

Following an incident in Cork city where he reportedly spit at a garda and told him he had “the coronavirus,” a man appeared in court charged with assault.

Adam Olden, 19, who has an address at Leamlara Close, Togherwas was arrested in early hours of Sunday morning.

He was taken before a special Cork District Court sitting on Sunday afternoon on charges of assault and two violations of the Public.

According to RTE, Sergeant Kevin Joyce told Judge John King, that the accused “spat at a member of An Garda Síochána and claimed that he had the coronavirus”.

It’s understood that the teenager claimed on Sunday morning that the incident was only a joke – but the gardai are not taking it as such as two gardai are now forced to go into isolation for two weeks.

Mr Olden was remanded on bail until Wednesday’s court sitting which he does not have to attend. He has been placed on curfew and must tell gardai 24 hours in advance if he’s leaving his address. He will also likely have to take a test for covid-19
