EU ministers have agreed to introduce a €3 customs fee on parcels valued under €150 that are sent from outside the European Union.

The European Commission said the move is intended to help safeguard the competitiveness of businesses within the bloc, reports Breaking News.

The measure is due to take effect next July and will impact imports from online retailers such as Shein and Temu.

The EU said the new charge will support European companies “by levelling the playing field between e-commerce and traditional retail”, reports Breaking News.

Denmark’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Stephanie Lose, said the proposals have received broad backing from member states.

“The temporary measure will be a €3 fee per parcel imported to the European Union. We need to get the techmical work in place moving forward from here,” she said, reports Breaking News.
