Thanks for the memories, Gaybo – The funeral has taken place of legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne

There really won’t be another like him. Gay Byrne was arguably Ireland’s best ever broadcaster – and possibly even one of the best in the world.

The funeral of the legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne has taken place in Dublin with thousands of people in attendance.

RTÉ broadcast the entire funeral ceremony on RTE One, RTE News Now and on the player, which started from 11:30am this morning.

Bryan Dobson presented coverage of service from St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Church, Dublin, and also had commentary from John Bowman and Mary Kennedy.

Those in attendance included Gay’s beloved family as chief mourners, including wife Kathleen, his two daughters and Gay’s grandchildren.

President Higgins along with the Taoiseach and a list of Irish politicians both current and former were also in attendance.

Fr Brian D’Arcy helped with the service while violin music played. Gay is now being laid to rest in a private ceremony.

RIP Gay Byrne.
