The cost of quitting: Government set to consider new proposals that will see a levy placed on e-cigarettes

The Department of Finance has informed the Government that they should seriously consider introducing a new levy on the liquid used in e-cigarettes.

According to a number of reports it is thought the department have recommended that a 50C levy should be placed on every 10ml of the liquid used in the products. It is believed that introducing such a tax the Government could yield annual profit of €8.3 million.

Although the department say’s: “The implementation and collection of such a tax would be difficult given the wide variety of ways in which these products are supplied to the consumer.” “Secondly, as previously stated, many sources consider e-cigarettes to be a cessation tool and certainly less harmful than cigarettes.”

The news however will most likely not go down well with the Irish taxpayer as many use electronic cigarettes to quit smoking altogether.
