The number of Ukrainians arriving into Ireland is 10 times the EU average

The rate of increase in the number of Ukrainian arrivals to Ireland in the last 12 months was 10 times higher than the average increase in the number of people fleeing Ukraine to the EU over the same period, reports Breaking News.

Official figures published by the European Commission show that in the 12 months to the end of September 2023, the number of Ukrainians applying for international protection in the republic increased by 72.1% as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, the number of Ukrainian citizens seeking asylum across the EU increased by only 7.2%.

The figures were released shortly after Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the government must take action to “slow down” the number of Ukrainians in Ireland, reports Breaking News.

This is the second-highest rate of increase among the 27 EU member states over the past year after Romania, where the number of refugees from Ukraine has effectively doubled to around 140,000, reports Breaking News.
