The Pogues frontman Shane McGowan has splashed out on a new set of teeth just in time for Christmas. The Fairytale of New York singer famously suffered from bad dental health over the course of his career as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. He has now been fitted with 22 new teeth, including a gold incisor.
In 2009, Shane had his last tooth removed and was advised to wear dentures. However the 57-year-old decided to treat himself to implants after being persuaded by his girlfriend Victoria Mary Clarke.
“Victoria had hers done last year and I thought they were great, so I decided to go with the same dentist, Darragh. It was a bit swollen for the first few days but I’m feeling good now. I’m getting used to them now.”
Shane needed to have 6 operations as well as numerous consultations before completing his new smile. The musician’s transformation is set to be detailed in a new documentary, Shane MacGowan: A Wreck Reborn – that will air on Sky Arts on Sunday at 10pm.
