The incident happened this morning at the family farm in Kilcolgan, Galway. It is understood the young boy, who was an only child, died after falling into a potato sorting machine located inside a shed.
The boy was rushed to University Hospital Galway but was pronounced dead.
The local community is said to be numb with grief after the news of the tragic incident spread.
Two separate investigations have been launched into the tragic event.
