The Department of Education will most likely be put under further pressure today as two of the country’s biggest teachers unions are expected to support the INTO and call for further talks over the current two tier pay system.

In what will be a busy week for the Education Minister Richard Bruton, all three teaching unions are set to request the Government for showdown talks in the hope of abolishing the current low pay ruling for new recruits.

The issue which has been the subject of widespread debate in recent months has been once again highlighted as all three teaching unions are currently in the process of holding their annual conference.

It is expected that the ASTI and the TUI will pledge their support to abolishing the system which unfairly pays less to to recruits hired after 2010.

All three unions say they will request further talks with Mr Bruton who is scheduled to appear at both the INTO and the ASTI conference later today.

Although the both the ASTI and INTO unions say they hope to avoid the prospect of holding a ballot for industrial action, they have reiterated that a ballot will be held if the Government does not agree to a common motion which is set to be submitted later today.
