The protracted aberration of water charges marches on: Fianna Fail now say that those who use ‘excessive’ water must pay for it

When it comes to water charges, a thunderous stupidity seems to pervade all Government officials caught in the fray.

Now, Fianna Fail say that those who use ‘excessive’ water should pay.

After several months of yet more wastage, an ‘expert’ commission concluded what everyone had said from the very beginning: Water should be funded through general taxation.

Now, an Oireachtas committee will decide whether those who wisely chose not to pay should be prosecuted or not.

And Fianna Fail’s Barry Cowen, firmly taking the baton from Labour’s Alan Kelly when it comes to water-related soundbites, said “So you have to ask yourself, and the committee must ask itself: what’s normal use, what’s excessive use, should we continue with individual metering or should there be district metering, which is a recommendation again of the committee, what methods of conservation should be explored other than the view of the previous Government that the only form of conservation in town as far as they were concerned, was the enforcement of water charges.”
