The Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has strongly dismissed claims that Ireland could follow the UK out of the EU, by calling reports fake news.
Mr Noonan who was in Brussels ahead of a meeting of EU ministers of finance, reiterated the Government’s stance and said ‘Irexit’ was highly unlikely.
Mr Noonan told reporters: “I would use a phrase that I would never use but I am borrowing – from president [Donald] Trump – fake news or very fake news.” “There is no possibility whatsoever of Irexit.”
The Minister’s comments come after an article was printed in the Daily Telegraph that outlined the prospect of the Irish State leaving the EU.
