They gave them nothing: Budget neglected child poverty, says homeless committee

The Government has promoted its new spending and taxation measures as being aimed at supporting the most vulnerable groups in society, reports Breaking News.

Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary, described it as the largest increase to the Child Support Payment in the State’s history, highlighting a €16 weekly rise to €78 for children aged 12 and over (a 26 per cent increase), and an €8 weekly rise to €58 for children under 12 (a 16% increase).

The measures also included a €10 boost to core social welfare payments, reports Breaking News.

Despite this, Suzanne Rogers of Social Justice Ireland criticised the Budget for failing to address fundamental problems.

Speaking on Newstalk, she said: “None of the decisions we see anywhere across government or policy, I think, are looking at what Ireland should look like in 2040 or 2050 or 2060. The budget… we were led to believe it was going to be a child poverty budget. Apart from the qualified child payment, there was really nothing in it for low-income families,” reports Breaking News.
