In what as seen as a metaphorical legend, it is commonly said that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, well it appears as if they’re back after one family came in contact with one of the slithering reptiles in their back garden in Co Offaly.

It was reported by RTE that a nine-year-old boy, Fionn Kilmurray came across a deadly saw-scaled viper in his back garden on Sunday who then went into his mother to get her to look at what he had found.

Fortunately, neither the child or his mother were bitten by the snake, which is thought to be one of the deadliest in the world, and Fionn’s mother Aoife Kilmurray placed the poisonous snake in a box before contacting the National Reptile Zoo to alert them to their discovery.

When Mrs Kilmurray placed in the snake in a clear box, she did not know just how dangerous it was.

Director of the National Reptile Zoo, James Hennessy, who collected the snake, said that it is believed it came to Ireland in shipment from India and said that the incident highlighted the need for stricter monitoring of cargo and surprise contents.

This is the first time a saw-scaled viper has been found in the wild in Ireland.
