This day two years ago, the pandemic really began in Ireland as the then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar locked down the country from a speech in New York.

From 6pm on March 12th 2020, schools, colleges, cultural buildings were all closed.

Varadkar said that indoor gatherings of no more than 100 people, outdoor gathers of no more than 500 people.

He said that supermarkets would remain open where possible but people who can work from home were advised to do so.

He said that Ireland would implement all resources, which were substantial but not unlimited, into tackling this crisis.

Varadkar said that “we must look after our elderly, the sick and those who are at risk”. He said that Ireland would eventually bounce back.

Two years on, the country is finally beginning to emerge from the pandemic.
