The picture, which was captured by Kerstin Langenberger, on the Norweigan archipelago Svalbard, said: “Many times I have seen horribly thin bears, those were exclusively females, like this one here. Males often have healthy weights”.
The picture is raising concerns over global warming. However, some people are arguing that it is just a sick/old bear.
Iain Stirling from University of Alberta, said:”The bear may be starving but it may just be old. A difficulty in hunting could be involved”.
National geographic photographer, Paul Nicklen spoke about images he had taken saying: “The bears were so skinny that they appeared to have died of starvation. In the absence of sea ice they are not able to hunt seals. In all my years growing up in the Arctic and later working as a biologist, I had never found a dead polar bear. Now it is much more common”.
Whatever the reason, the picture has brought to light the danger that this species are under.
