‘Arab’, ‘White Irish Traveller’, and ‘White Roma’ are among the ethnic groups that have applied to become Gardai, reports The Mirror.
This is in accordance with updated data released by Justice Minister Helen McEntee, who stated that this year, applications from 12 distinct specified ethnic groups had been received by the Gardai.
Minister McEntee listed additional ethnic groups as Black or Black Irish/African, White Irish, Asian or Asian Irish (Chinese), and Asian or Asian Irish (Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi) in a written Dail reply to Social Democrat Catherine Murphy.
According to Minister McEntee, some candidates would rather exclude their ethnicity from their application, reports The Mirror.
718 individuals from the 2022 and 2023 contests are still applying for jobs at An Garda Síochána, according to Minister McEntee.
According to the Minister, the Public Appointments Service (PAS) oversees the first hiring process for the selection of Garda trainees on behalf of the Garda Commissioner.
An Garda Síochána is in charge of the latter phases of the hiring procedure, which involve screening candidates, having them pass a physical competency test, and having them undergo a medical examination, reports The Mirror.
