The Russian Ministry of Defence announced the successful test of the highly advanced RS-28 Sarmat.
“The new missile is able to overcome all modern means of missile defence,” Putin said. “There is not — and won’t be — anything comparable in the world. This weapon will make those who try to threaten us in the heat of aggressive rhetoric think again.”
The Russian news agency TASS reported that long-range missile has been in development since 2009 and can carry up to 15 independently targeted nuclear warheads.
The Kremlin released footage of President Putin inspecting the launch of the missile from an underground silo via live video.
Moscow say’s the weapon was launched from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in the northwest of the country, successfully hitting targets in the Russian far east, several thousand miles away.
With tensions at unprecedented heights between Russia and NATO over the Kremlin’s military intervention in Ukraine, the missile launch sends a clear message to Western country’s stay out of direct intervention in the war which Moscow says would provoke a nuclear response.
