In what could be described as a small leap for robot-kind – though numbering in the thousands – humanoid robots joined human runners in a half-marathon held in Beijing, China, on Saturday, reports Breaking News.
Walking on two legs, the robots came in different models and sizes as they tackled the 13.1-mile race, assisted by teams of operators, navigators, and engineers. Organizers claim this marks a world first for such an event.
To ensure safety, a divider was placed between the paths taken by robots and their human counterparts, reports Breaking News.
Humans followed the standard marathon rules, while the 20 robot teams competing in the Humanoid Robot Half-Marathon followed modified regulations, including designated areas for battery swaps.
The Sky Project Ultra robot, also known as Tien Kung Ultra from the Tien Kung Team, emerged as the top-performing machine, finishing the race in two hours, 40 minutes and 42 seconds.
Additional honors were awarded for categories such as best endurance, most innovative form, and best gait design, reports Breaking News.
