Thousands of people may be without power until February, says ESB Networks

Margaret Attridge, Uisce Éireann’s head of water operations, stated that the midlands and northwest, particularly Longford and Meath, are now the trouble spots, reports RTE.

Six boil water alerts will go into place, she added, because the power disruptions have largely impaired treatment operations.

She stated that although it was not feasible to deliver generators to every location, they are relocating generators from the south. “We are looking to get generators in wherever we can,” she added, reports RTE.

In towns and villages, she continued, Uisce Éireann will supply alternate water sources via tankers or bottled water; the specific locations would be announced on the organization’s website.

People who are elderly or in danger should get in touch with the customer service office, and help will be given, reports RTE.

In the wake of storm Éowyn, the National Emergency Coordination Group is collaborating with local authorities to support the most impacted and at-risk individuals.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week, Keith Leonard said: “Local authorities are going to look at what the best options are. I’m not sure if there’s accommodation available for those kinds of numbers of people, but certainly local relief will be provided, and every option is being explored at the moment to see what can be done for those who are particularly affected over the longer term”, reports RTE.

According to him, the bad weather we’re seeing today is challenging, but it falls within the range of challenging winter weather.

“ESB Networks and the critical infrastructure operators are going to continue as much as they can with those restoration operations. People, regardless of the debris, should not approach fall in lines, and they should ring up number 1800 3702 999, if they see fall in lines and not try and clear debris themselves”, reports RTE.

Storm Éowyn’s catastrophic winds pounded the area early on Friday morning, tearing off the roof of a home in Carna, Co Galway.

According to Siobhan Wynne, regional manager for ESB Networks, staff spent the weekend on the scene gathering information for determining the extent of the damage, reports RTE.

According to her, all restoration times on the PowerCheck website are now current based on that data.

“It really is unprecedented, the damage that we’re facing out there now on the ground”, reports RTE.
