A 24-yr-old man was sentenced to five years in prison for drug crimes, assaulting two women, and threatening and taking over a cab, reports RTE.
David McNamara, who lived on Kiltalown Road in Tallaght, Dublin, acknowledged the crimes, which were committed over a four-year span.
In the most recent instance, on July 20, 2023, McNamara and his partner were at her Finglas house when they called a cab to come to his Tallaght residence, reports RTE.
He started yelling at her as the cab proceeded onto the M50. When the driver pulled over to the hard shoulder, he yelled at her to get out and told him to “leave the car before I stick a knife in your throat.”
Additionally, the woman was able to exit the cab before McNamara snatched the wheel and sped off, reports RTE.
Later, it was discovered deserted close to his house.
Instead of retaliating, the driver grabbed his phone and dialled 999 before he got out.
He informed the gardaà that he had three children at home and that the cab was his main source of income, and that he honestly believed McNamara was going to knife him, reports RTE.
Although she spoke to gardaà at Finglas Garda Station, the woman first denied knowing McNamara.
She was evaluated as “particularly vulnerable” by a professional who questioned her.
A few days later, Gardaà arrived at McNamara’s Tallaght house with a warrant to arrest him, but he gave “significant resistance” and bolted out the back, reports RTE.
Even though the home was surrounded, he sought refuge in a neighbor’s house, and the neighbour refused to cooperate with the gardaÃ.
After that, the garda helicopter and McNamara were taken into custody, and the gardaà returned with an armed backup unit.
He placed two bags containing €266 worth of cocaine and €308 worth of heroin, together with €155 in cash, on the detention counter in the garda station, reports RTE.
He denied using violence, abuse, or coercion to control his partner, but he responded “no comment” to the taxi driver’s accusations when he was examined by the GardaÃ.
He called her “a stupid s*** and f****** k******” and said that she had been hurt “by a fall outside the house” or “maybe it was dirt.” He also denied ever assaulting her, reports RTE.
Additionally, he stated that he was keeping the narcotics for a buddy.
The Garda The victim had attempted to retract her statement, Shane Gallagher said the court, and he had arranged for colleagues to transport her to the courtroom in an unmarked vehicle, reports RTE.
McNamara, who has been detained since September 2023, has prior convictions for assault and narcotics possession.
Four years before, when she was sixteen, he had similarly attacked another lady, reports RTE.
