Thug (26) in Waterford who bragged over punching victim ‘like Conor McGregor’ gets jailed for life

Following the on-bail attacker’s boast that he had punched his defenceless victim “like Conor McGregor in the UFC,” the family of a 26-yr-old man who was killed while walking alone down a rural town street have stated that Irish society needs to consider “who we want as role models for young men,” reports Breaking News.

The three young men who halted to assist and shield Cian Gallagher as he lay on the ground “when we as his family could not, are role models,” according to the family’s heartfelt victim impact statement given to the Central Criminal Court during Monday’s sentencing of Maurice Boland, who was given the mandatory life sentence for murder.

“When they demonstrated how they helped Cian, they exemplified the unselfishness and kindness that Cian held dear and represented each day. These young men are role models that young people in our society should aspire to,” they stated, reports Breaking News.

Boland was convicted on December 12th of this year of killing Mr. Gallagher. This was the defendant’s second murder trial; the jury disagreed in his first trial in April of this year.

Mr. Gallagher passed away in the hospital eight days after the deadly attack, which took place on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, and continued until the early hours of November 3, 2022. On Barrack Street in the town, Boland (37), of Bridgeview Close, Tallow, Co Waterford, had entered a guilty plea to the manslaughter of Mr. Gallagher but not guilty to murder, reports Breaking News.

Ms. Justice Eileen Creedon expressed her sincere condolences to the Gallagher family for Cian’s passing today and stated that Boland must get the obligatory life sentence.

The defendant was on release at the time of the offence on a section 3 assault causing hurt charge for which he had been sentenced to two years, the court had previously heard, and Boland had 23 prior convictions. When the assault accusation, which was filed in May of this year, expires, the defendant will begin serving a life term, reports Breaking News.

No parent should have to get a call “in the dead of night” telling them that their youngest son was in intensive care after an assault, according to the statement that Detective Garda Alan Toft gave to the sentencing court today on behalf of the Gallagher family and Cian’s partner.

“No parent should have to watch their child die. No parent should ever have to bury their child. No words can describe the effect the nightmare of the past two years has had on our family. We can put on a brave face when required but it just masks our pain”, reports Breaking News.

The Gallagher family said: “He was taught to respect others, care for the vulnerable, and, above all, protect and support his family. In the early hours of November 2nd, 2022 these values, which Cian embodied so fully and our role as a family to protect Cian, were violated by an act of senseless violence”, reports Breaking News.
