Thug arrested after League of Ireland volunteers beaten and injured during row at Bray vs Longford match

Gardaí are investigating an incident at a League of Ireland game in Longford last night after a teenager was arrested.

Authorities were called to Bishopsgate Stadium on the outskirts of Longford around 9pm after being made aware of a disruption involving a small group of thugs at the match.

The boy, a teenager, was arrested under the Public Order Act.

Longford Town played Bray Wanderers in the League of Ireland Premier Division.

The small riot was brought under control by the Gardaí and Longford Town FC stewards.

Several of those involved were identified and removed from the scene.

No serious injuries were reported. However, it is understood that some of the stewards suffered minor injuries after they were beaten with flags and attempted punches and kicks.

Gardaí say all circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated and the investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, the Football Association of Ireland said it strongly condemns the conduct of a small number of spectators at the game.
