Tianjin: Deadly Cyanide Released into Atmosphere

Tianjin

The death toll now stands at 112 and 95 people remain missing, including 85 firefighters, following the warehouse explosions in Tianjin on Wednesday.

Reports say that 70 times the permitted amount of sodium cyanide was being stored in the warehouse.

People seeking refuge in nearby shelters were evacuated yesterday morning because of a change in wind direction. This could disperse hazardous pollutants. People are told to wear long sleeved cloths as well as masks.

Rescue workers wearing gas masks and hazard suits hurried to clear the area before the weather and wind changes because of concerns that wind could spread the toxins and rain could cause a dangerous reaction with chemicals at the site.

Police shut down a protest yesterday outside a hotel, owned by the central government, but demonstrators continued to plead for more details on relatives who have not been accounted for since the blasts.
