TikTok challenge sees rise in thefts of Kia and Hyundai cars

A dangerous challenge spreading across TikTok and other social media platforms has put car owners and police departments across America on red alert with fears that it could spread to Ireland and the UK.

Youngsters are being told to steal certain cars off the street with a USB cable.

Certain makes and models of Kia and Hyundai 2010-2021 vehicles that use a mechanical key instead of a remote and button to start the vehicle. Investigators told CNBC the trend started last year and the number of stolen cars across the country continues to rise.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, police reported that by mid-July more than a third of all carjackings were linked to the TikTok challenge. Los Angeles officials say the virus trend has led to an 85% increase in car thefts at Hyundai and Kia compared to last year.
