Video-sharing platform TikTok says it has uncovered and shut down a covert influence operation targeting Ireland, reports RTE.

The network had 72 accounts and over 94,000 followers.

TikTok said account operators posted divisive views in an attempt to intensify social conflict.

The details are mentioned in a report submitted by TikTok to the European Commission as part of the EU Code of Practice on Disorganized Data.

The application covers the period January 2023 – June 2023.

“The individuals behind this network created inauthentic accounts; hyper-posted content with divisive views related to nationalism in Ireland, Japan, Russia, and Taiwan,” TikTok said, reports RTE.

The report also found that they “hyper-posted comments with similar low -quality content in an attempt to redirect TikTok users off-platform and to intensify social conflict,” reports RTE.

TikTok said it discovered and shut down covert influence operations in Russia, Poland and Germany.

TikTok, the parent of Google, Microsoft Meta, Facebook and Instagram, signed up to the EU’s voluntary obfuscation code last year, but Twitter, now known as X, dropped out after Elon Musk bought the platform.

The EU has identified X as the biggest source of fake news and urged Musk to comply with new EU rules aimed at tackling disinformation.

European Commission Vice-President Vera Jaurova said X is “the platform with the highest number of misleading or misleading posts.
