Video sharing platform TikTok has announced that 2 million people in Ireland now use the app every month, reports RTE.

The company says its community of creators across the country helped achieve this milestone.

“Our vibrant community of 2 million people across Ireland is made up of book lovers, foodies, families, musicians, comedians, artists and so much more, who come to TikTok to discover, share their stories, inspire creativity and spread joy,” said Cormac Keenan, Head of Trust and Safety at TikTok, reports RTE.

A Chinese-owned video-sharing app has come under scrutiny over the extent of China’s access to user data.

In April, the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) issued guidance to Irish government departments and state agencies advising against the use of the app on official devices.

The US and UK governments, as well as EU institutions, have banned the use of the platform on employee devices due to cybersecurity concerns.

TikTok has described the government ban as misleading and based on misconceptions, reports RTE.

Ireland plays a key role in the company’s efforts to address data security issues.

The plan, called “Project Clover”, involves storing European users’ data in two data centres in Dublin and a third in Norway.
