When Covid-19 first hit Europe back in early 2020, panic buyers rushed to the supermarkets to bulk buy toilet rolls. It was an unusual response to the pandemic and we may recall some very funny toilet roll memes posted back then.
Fast forward to today, the same phenomenon is repeating itself. According to the Metro.co.uk, Costco, a large wholesaler has reported a run on toilet rolls. Reports highlighted “long queues of people outside the Costco store in Manchester .. with dozens of people taking advantage of the wholesaler’s offers – particularly on toilet roll”.
The UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) has confirmed that one in six people have been unable to find the vital products they need for sale in the last two weeks, while a quarter are having similar difficulties getting hold of non-essential food items.
