Top Gun Tanaiste reaffirms ‘unwavering commitment’ to UN Lebanon mission

The Tánaiste will reaffirm Ireland’s “unwavering commitment” to the UN’s peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, as well as to the country’s security and stability, reports Breaking News.

Simon Harris is visiting Lebanon this week amid escalating tensions with Israel.

During his visit, he will hold discussions with Lebanon’s foreign affairs and defence ministers in Beirut and meet with Irish peacekeeping troops serving in the Unifil mission, reports Breaking News.

The Tánaiste stated that Private Seán Rooney, an Irish soldier who lost his life in Lebanon, will be a central topic in his political discussions.

Private Rooney, a 24-year-old from Co Donegal, was killed while deployed with Unifil on December 14th, 2022, reports Breaking News.

Mr. Harris is expected to express the Government’s “deep disappointment and dissatisfaction” with the slow progress of legal proceedings, emphasizing that the delay is “particularly distressing” for the Rooney family.

Later on Wednesday, the Tánaiste will visit Camp Shamrock in south Lebanon, where the 125th Infantry Battalion is stationed as part of the Unifil peacekeeping operation, reports Breaking News.

He is expected to convey to the peacekeepers the “great sense of pride” the Irish public has in their service.

Additionally, he will announce an increase in funding for Civil-Military Co-operation (CIMIC) projects, doubling it to €80,000.

These projects support community and health facilities, as well as workshops and educational classes for children, reports Breaking News.
