Top paid civil servants are on more money than Varadkar are salary figures get released to the public

The highest-paid official in the Department of Finance earns more than the Taoiseach by about €250,000 a year, reports The Mirror.

General Secretary John Hogan’s salary is €242,250, significantly higher than Leo Varadkar’s approximately €205,000.

Nine other civil servants in the department receive between €100,000 and €200,000 in pay packages.

This means that several civil servants earn more than DT, whose salary has recently risen to €107,376, reports The Mirror.

Finance Minister Michael McGrath released the new figures in response to a parliamentary question from Aontu leader Pedra Tóibín.

Deputy Toibin said: “Some of the salaries for top civil servants in government departments are eye-watering. In some cases, they’re paid more than TDs, ministers or indeed the Taoiseach. Given the extraordinary wage some are receiving, we really need to see transparency and accountability and more frequent appearances before Oireachtas committees to justify their policies and performances in the departments. Aontu believes that the high-up officials in government departments or agencies should be performance-related. If the HSE isn’t rectifying crises in terms of beds in hospitals and clearing waiting lists effectively, then the CEO should face a pay cut,” reports The Mirror.
