Tough guy Martin criticises Israeli Defense Minister’s comments that Palestinians would be relocated in Ireland

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and other Irish officials have criticized Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s remarks regarding the obligation of certain countries, including Ireland, to accept Palestinian refugees from Gaza.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has labeled the statements from Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz as “provocative.” Katz suggested that nations like Spain, Ireland, Norway, and others, which have criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza, have a “legal obligation” to accept Palestinians.

The comments were made as Katz ordered the Israeli military to prepare for the “voluntary departure” of Gaza residents, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of plans to take control of Gaza, resettle its Palestinian population, and redevelop it into what he termed the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

Katz further stated, “Countries like Spain, Ireland, Norway, and others, which have falsely accused Israel over its actions in Gaza, are legally obligated to allow Gazans to enter their territory. Their hypocrisy will be exposed if they refuse.” He contrasted this with countries like Canada, which he noted has a structured immigration program and has shown willingness to accept Gazans.

In response, a spokesperson for Micheál Martin emphasized the Palestinian right to a homeland and reiterated Ireland’s support for a two-state solution as the only feasible path to peace. “I believe the Defence Minister’s comments were provocative and the focus should be on ensuring that the war in Gaza ends, that the second phase of the ceasefire comes into force and that all remaining hostages are released,” the spokesperson said.

Similarly, a spokesperson for Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris stressed that the international community’s priority should be on sustaining the ceasefire, releasing hostages, increasing humanitarian aid, rebuilding Gaza, and advancing a political process towards a two-state solution. “The objective must be that the people of Palestine return safely to their home and any comments to the contrary are unhelpful and a source of distraction,” the spokesperson remarked.

These statements from Irish leaders highlight the ongoing tension between actions taken by Israel in Gaza and the international community’s response, underscoring the complexities of the conflict and the humanitarian issues at stake.
