Tough guy Martin wants ‘defining year’ in his first year as Taoiseach

Following their first call since he was elected Taoiseach, Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated that he and Sir Keir Starmer wished to make 2025 a “defining year” for their nations’ ties, reports Breaking News.

On Monday morning, the two leaders spoke about the ongoing efforts to recover from Storm Éowyn.

They also discussed the upcoming Ireland-UK annual summit series, the first of which is scheduled to take place in Britain in March, reports Breaking News.

“We are both committed to making 2025 an important and defining year for Irish-British relations as we initiate a series of annual summits to drive a programme of strategic co-operation between our two countries,” Mr Martin said after the call, reports Breaking News.

“We spoke about Northern Ireland and our shared vision as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement to furthering prosperity and reconciliation to the benefit of all,” reports Breaking News.

Sir Keir stated that the UK was ready to provide more support if needed, and Mr. Martin praised the help that UK workers had given in addressing the storm’s effects.

Downing Street said: “The leaders agreed that the UK–Ireland relationship was going from strength to strength, and it was vital to continue that in such a volatile geopolitical context. Discussing devastating Storm Éowyn at the weekend, the leaders paid tribute to the work of first responders and engineers to restore electricity to thousands of homes,” reports Breaking News.

“The Prime Minister said that he had also spoken to the First Minister and deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland and that the UK stood by to offer further support, as required. The Prime Minister also updated on his EU reset, and the leaders underscored the importance of a close and constructive relationship with the EU to boost prosperity and security,” reports Breaking News.

Mr. Martin called for a “surge” in humanitarian relief to Gaza, and they also talked about the Middle East and Ukraine.

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, both presidents are scheduled to attend Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies, reports Breaking News.

“Today, we talked about how important it is to continue fighting against antisemitism and all forms of racism, intolerance, and discrimination,” Mr. Martin stated.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy also had a conversation with Tánaiste and Simon Harris, the minister of foreign affairs, on Monday, reports Breaking News.
