Tough guy Varadkar says he wants maximum transparency in RTE

When it comes to departure packages, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has stated that the Government is seeking the “maximum transparency that is legally possible” from RTÉ, reports RTE.

It followed RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst’s statement yesterday that he must “respect the law” and anticipates receiving additional legal advice “in the next couple of days” about the release of departure package information.

Additionally, Mr. Bakhurst revealed to RTÉ’s Drivetime on Monday that it was revealed in July 2023 that Rory Coveney, the former director of strategy at RTÉ, had received an exit bonus upon leaving the company, reports RTE.

But in the Drivetime interview yesterday, Mr. Bakhurst stated that he “couldn’t fire” Mr. Coveney. “It was fair that RTÉ made a fair settlement for him to leave RTÉ,” he stated.

He added: “I said statutory at the time, I think what I meant is, the amount that is appropriate for the length of time he was here. Statutory is probably a technical term. He got less than the amount he would be entitled to if he went to the WRC,” reports RTE.
