A 21-year-old college student tragically took his own life after discovering he failed his second year in college over an email, an inquest has revealed this week.

Alex Hayter’s father says Nottingham Trent University could have saved the young man’s life if the staff had recognised so-called “red flags” in his behaviour. The young man struggled with his IT tasks after moving home amid the first wave of the coronavirus crisis.

After failing several modules, he decided to take five exams and one exam in the summer so he wouldn’t have to repeat the entire year.
According to the Metor, Coroner Rosamund Rhodes-Kemp said the work package was ‘understandable’ but ‘unrealistic’.

Alex stopped responding to the university after agreeing to do the extra work and did not turn in his homework on time or finish his exam, the Winchester court said.

Authorities launched an urgent search when he disappeared after he went for a walk hearing the news that he failed his second year and would have to sit it again at start again in 2021.
He was found dead on September 21st near his home in the village of Abbotts Ann, Hampshire.

His family said there were no words to express how upset and heartbroken they are that their beautiful, funny and intelligent Alex is no longer with them.

The Metro reports that the University has since made changes and will now be in personal contact with students if they fail the year, confirmed Professor Mary O’Neill, executive dean of the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University.
