There has been two more tragic farm accidents over the weekend in which an eight-year-old girl has died, and an 11-year-old girl was critically injured in north Cork.

The incident is believed to have happened just outside Newtownshandrum at approximately 6pm yesterday and involved farm machinery. It is understood the girls were picking blackberries in a field at the time.

It is thought that the bucket on the front loader of a tractor may have come loose and snapped off when it braked to avoid one of the girls.

Sadly 8 year old Paula Dinsberga was pronounced dead at the scene, whilst the second girl was taken to Cork University Hospital. She is believed to be in a stable condition.

The two youngsters who are not sisters, were understood to be staying with friends of their Latvian parents for the weekend when the incident occurred.

Paula’s parents flew back to Dublin last night unaware of what had happened and were informed of the accident by gardaí when their plane landed.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out today.
