Tragic collision claims life of young man on Galway road

A devastating road traffic collision in County Galway has left a man in his 20s dead and two others injured. The incident occurred late Sunday night, March 9, 2025, on the R347 near Monivea, involving three vehicles in a crash that has shaken the local community.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 11:45 PM, where the young man was pronounced dead. Two other drivers, both men in their 30s, were taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment, though details of their conditions remain unclear. Gardaí have sealed off the rural stretch of road as forensic collision experts investigate the cause of the tragedy, with local diversions in place between the L3113 at Garbally and the R339 at Monivea village.

RTÉ reports that the R347 remains closed this morning, Monday, March 10, 2025, as authorities work to unravel the sequence of events. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area while the investigation continues. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of family, and a postmortem is scheduled for later today.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were on the R347 between 11:15 PM and midnight last night. They’re also requesting dashcam footage from the public to aid their efforts. Superintendent Liam Geraghty of the Galway Garda Division called it a “tragic loss of life” and stressed the importance of community assistance in piecing together what happened.

This latest fatality adds to growing concerns over road safety in Ireland. According to RTÉ, Gardaí are renewing their plea for caution on the nation’s roads. Anyone with information is asked to contact Athenry Garda Station at 091-844016 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 66-61-11.
