Eight children have sadly died after drowning in a river during a rescue attempt in China.
It is understood the children all sadly passed away after they tried to rescue a fellow student from the Fu River near Chongqing, in Sichuan province on Sunday.
According to local media reports the children drowned after one primary school student got into difficulties after they fell into the waters.
It is believed that the other seven tried to rescue the childĀ from the waters but sadly they fell in and also drowned.
The news comes after a major rescue operation was launched involving over 200 volunteers.
Local police say that the bodies of the children were recovered on Sunday evening and early on Monday morning.
They added that an investigation is currently ongoing.
