Tragic: The remains of the five victims of the Buncrana pier tragedy have been brought home this afternoon




The remains of the five victims of the Buncrana pier tragedy in Co Donegal, have returned to their Derry home this afternoon.

The five family members named Evan (8), Mark (12) Jodie Lee (15) and Ruth Daniels (59) along with Sean (49) were taken home to a distraught wife/mother/sister and daughter Louise in St Eithne’s Park shortly after midday today. Meanwhile the priest who will be holding funeral mass for the Buncrana victims has told of his heartbreak as he prepares the family for their service.

It is understood the funeral service for the five victims will take place at the Holy Family parish church in Ballymagroarty in Derry at 2pm on Thursday. Local parish priest Fr. Paddy O’Kane told reporters that he has been writing the homily for the family this morning. “What I am saying is that there is a little sliver of hope because the baby was saved.” “I am going to speak about the bravery of Sean for trying to save his family. And also the bravery of that young man [Davitt] who tried to come to the family’s rescue.”

Fr O’Kane also told reporters that a book of condolence have been opened at St Josephs, Galliagh & Holy Family Chapel, Ballymagroarty. “There’s a book and people have been filling it in all the time and people who wish to pay their respects can still do so.”
