Transport operator Uber officially cancels all autonomous car testing after a woman is killed

Uber has confirmed that they will stop running tests on self-driving cars following the death of a 49 year old woman on Monday.

The decision comes after the woman was tragically killed following an accident involving an autonomous car.

According to reports stateside, the woman who has since been identified as Elaine Herzberg was killed after she was struck by a self-driving car in Tempe Arizona.

It is believed Mrs Herzberg was killed after the car hit her whilst she was crossing the road during its test run.

Although there was an Uber employee inside the car monitoring test at the time of the tragic accident, police say the occupant was unable to control the car in time in order to avoid the collision.

They also say that despite the best efforts of emergency personnel, Mrs Herzberg sadly passed away in hospital a short time later.

Meanwhile in an official statement released on Monday, Uber have said they will stop all testing on autonomous vehicles with immediate effect.

A spokesperson for the company has also offered their condolences to Mrs Herzberg’s family following the accident, before describing her death as  incredibly sad news.
