The young man who died after collapsing close to the finish line at yesterday’s SSE Airtricity Dublin half-marathon yesterday has been named as John Mc Hugh (23). The runner who suffered a cardiac event was supposed to celebrate his 24th birthday today.

In a statement yesterday, the half-marathon organisers said: “With great regret we must confirm that a 23yr old man passed away at today’s race. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this time.”

John was also an alumnus of Maynooth University holding a degree in Industrial and Product Design. In a statement Maynooth Student Union paid tribute to the young man.

“John was a pillar of warmth, positivity, humour, friendliness and support. His smile and sense of humour were just as contagious as his drive and determination. This is an unspeakable tragedy and our heart is broken for his family, friends and classmates. He will be remembered as the kind, warm character that lit up a room when he spoke, and a man you would be proud to call your friend. No words here will do him justice.”
