Tributes paid after two men killed in separate road incidents in Laois and Monaghan

Two people have lost their lives in separate road traffic accidents in counties Laois and Monaghan, reports RTE.

A man aged in his 30s was killed in a single-vehicle collision at Inishammon, Smithboro, in Co Monaghan, reports RTE.

He was declared dead at the scene of the incident, which happened on the R187 between Monaghan and Rosslea in Co Fermanagh at approximately 7.30pm yesterday evening.

The man’s body was taken to Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan, where a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out, reports RTE.

The road continues to be closed to facilitate a technical examination, with local diversions currently in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, or for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, from the area to contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047 77200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station, reports RTE.

In a separate incident, a man in his 70s died after being hit by a car on Main Street in Abbeyleix, Co Laois, at around 7pm yesterday.

He was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where he was later pronounced dead, reports RTE.

Gardaí are seeking witnesses, particularly road users with camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, who were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7.30pm yesterday, to contact Abbeyleix Garda Station on 057 8730580, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.

Their deaths bring the total number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year to 11, reports RTE.
