Tributes paid for Irish ‘gentleman’ who died suddenly while solo travelling abroad

Heartbreaking tributes have been paid to “a lovely young man” from Co Monaghan who passed away suddenly last weekend while travelling abroad, reports The Mirror.

James Hagan’s body is set to be returned from the Philippines to Ireland with assistance from the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, with the volunteer-run, donation-funded organisation guiding the family through the complex repatriation process, reports The Mirror.

The young man’s friends and family have joined forces to launch a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs associated with his death and to raise funds for the Irish charity supporting bereaved families.

A death notice shared by his family on RIP.ie states: “Clerkin Funeral Directors regret to share the news of the young and sudden death of James Hagan Mullaghmatt, Monaghan Town whilst solo travelling overseas. James is predeceased by his infant sisters Emily and Ailson. James will be eternally missed by his heartbroken parents Leo and Jenny, his sister Leonia, his brothers Raymond, Luke and his niece Caitlin. His large circle of friends, neighbours and friends will always fondly and remember James with love,” reports The Mirror.

A message shared on the GoFundMe page states: “As you may know that our son, brother, uncle James Hagan has passed away overseas. We are small family well known in our small town of Monaghan where James was well known and loved by everyone with his bright outlook on life,” reports The Mirror.

“James was an independent individual that went on his adventures unfortunately these tragic circumstances occurred overseas when James was happiest after losing 19 stone and gained his freedom by travelling and this wonderful trust is bringing our beloved James home we have so much gratitude for this trust and every cents counts to bring amazing people to there family from all over the world to their home. Want to join me in making a difference? I’m raising money to benefit Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me,” reports The Mirror.

James’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the close-knit community of Mullaghmatt, with tributes flooding in from friends, family, and neighbours for the well-loved young man, reports The Mirror.

In a message shared online, one mourner said: “So very saddened to hear about James’s so sudden death and so young, James was a lovely lad with a gentle manner and a lovely smile, he will be missed around Monaghan. My deepest sympathy to Jenny, Leo and family and to Bernie and Susie and all of the extended family and friends. Rest in peace James.”

Another person added: “Sincere condolences to the Jagan family on the loss of James. He was a true gentleman. Always spoke to everyone no matter who he was with my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” reports The Mirror.

A third person said: “What a lovely young lad you were James just a true gentleman anyone that knew you was lucky to have you in their life. Thinking of all the Hagan family as this dreadful time. Sleep tight James,” reports The Mirror.

Another mourner added: “I am so saddened to read this. James was such a lovely kind person. Rest in peace dear James and may God comfort Jenny and Family on their great loss,” reports The Mirror.

A close pal said: “Sincere sympathy to Jenny Leo and extended family and friends. James was a lovely friendly fella. To young to die. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” reports The Mirror.

While a neighbour of James’s in Mullaghmatt added: “Deepest condolences to Leo & Jenny, Leonia, Raymond & Luke and the wider Hagan family on the sad passing of James. James was a lovely young man with had a kind word and a chat for everyone who passed him. No doubt he will be deeply missed around Mullaghmatt and Monaghan Town. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew and loved him,” reports The Mirror.
